Brisbane in Design 2008 - The Egg chair
The Egg 1958 - 2008
50 years ago Arne Jacobsen designed the egg chair for a hotel in Denmark, it quickly became an internation icon and a favourite for interior designers the world over. To commemorate the 50th aniversay of the Egg chair Fritz Hansen, the original maker of the chair, devised a travelling exhibition of 50 Egg chairs in a different approach.
Tal R, a danish artist has created 50 chairs with a patchwork of different materials scourced and salvaged from around the world. The colourful designs are made up of a variety of materials from childrens textiles to denim and corduroy. Materials are taken from around the world and are as diverse as material from a girls dress to old discarded curtains.
The term 'Egg' has inspired the artist with ideas of fertility and his fascination with Sigmund Freud. Each chair has been named with links to the writings of Freud.
An exhibition of the 50 charis currently touring the world, is visting Brisbane as a part of Brisbane in Design before continuing on to Tokyo and New York before returning to Denmark.
The following is a few images taken during the open of the event, including some sefl indulgent images of my favourite parts including the chair entitled Moses and a detail of a 'Smurf' from Peyo's famous belgian cartoon

pages from a sketchbook
Thought i would post a few scans of some very rough sketches from the sketchbook. Hopefully these little cartoons will be cleaned up a bit by myself oneday and drawn properly. Its bascilly random thoughts that bounce into my head at various times of the day and then insist to be drawn out in comic form...

Essence of Rabbit
A few years ago I submitted a drawing of a rabbit for l'essence de lapin or the essence of rabbit. One of my first attempts at illustrator so i was pertty happy with the results, even though on the poster it wasn't one of the big ones.

salvaged cardboard Monkey
The monkey chasing the banana, the eternal struggle. This was done entirely from recycled material. A sheet of cardboard I found lying in the bin at the office became my canvas. After an afternoon drawing and colouring in, I then went at it lke a buzzard with a stanley knife to cut it out and piece it together. Unfortunalty it didn't survive the new office renovation and ended up in the bin.
Retro Gaming
Having recently moved into my new unit I found that had boxes and boxes of 'stuff' which I had collected over the years which needed sorting into some impression of order. After digging through boxes of old school books and random cables I was extremely happy to find my old gameboy. And not only that, it still worked! Even with the old batteries!
So the next few waking hours was spent re-establishing ties with the gameboy. The little white box became an extension of my hand, on the bus, at work whilst supposedly working. I was there punching buttons and relishing in the sounds of Mario land and Tetris. Not only that, but my eyes were marvelling at the bitmap style graphics in stunning black and green.
Next it’s on to the playstation 1...all I need to do is find it
